Psychological Therapy

Testing and Evaluation Services:  From the placid infant to the rebellious teenager, our evaluation process is customized to ascertain accurate information about your child and be able to draw useful conclusions and create treatment recommendations.  Our evaluators are experts on children with disabilities and therefore can help your child achieve maximum results yielding valuable information.

Diagnostic evaluations can assist when families notice a symptom or cluster of symptoms and are interested in determining if these symptoms are a variant of normal development or need diagnostic clarification. Our Team of expert Psychologists can evaluate children and assist with interventions, if necessary. Ongoing (short-term or long-term) therapy can help children who are experiencing a variety of neuropsychological, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Milestones uses three types of therapy: Psychotherapy (traditional “talk” therapy which focuses on past experiences and how they are impacting you currently), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (which focuses less on past experiences and more on practical solutions and techniques), and Exposure Response Prevention Therapy (systematically desensitizing and increasing tolerance for anxiety associated with Anxiety Disorders, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).

Although each of the above methods is delivered differently, each method provides emotional support and helps with conflict resolution and problem solving, aiming to change the person’s response to difficult situations, improve coping skills, and improve relationships. Some therapy may also be aimed at teaching children better ways to cope with anxiety and depression and increase self-esteem.

Depending upon the child’s needs, therapy can be effective individually, in small group, or as a family. Milestones builds relationships and conducts therapy while engaging in preferred activities for children
such as pretend play, role-playing, playing games, art projects, drawing, and creating charts and graphs.

Evaluations are conducted to assist with planning and intervention by:

  • Determining a child’s profile including strengths and challenges
  • Understanding how a child’s challenges might impact him/her on an interpersonal or academic basis
  • Determining, confirming, or ruling out potential challenges and diagnoses
  • Monitoring a child’s progress over time and assuring a positive developmental trajectory.

Milestones’ board certified psychologists conduct the following evaluations

  • Educational or Academic Assessments:
    This testing can be useful:
    • in determining a child’s IQ
    • in providing in-depth information about the child’s learning profile as well as academic profiles in all four core subjects (Math, Science, History, and English) and assist in determining a child's grade level.
    • in determining if a child has any type of learning disability or disorder (such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscacula, etc.) and if so, provide treatment recommendations
    • in determining a learning profile.  For example, if a child has a processing disorder or difficulty with working memory, these can both interfere with academic achievement.
    • in providing the types of interventions that may be useful in helping your child if s/he has learning differences
  • Psychological Assessment or Evaluation:
This testing can be useful to:
    • determine if a child has an underlying disorder or cluster of symptoms that are not physical in nature
    • determine the level of distress the child’s symptoms are causing
    • provide a second opinion for a psychological evaluation conducted by another person

Ongoing Individual, Group, or Family Therapy

Ongoing therapy (short or long term) can help children who are experiencing a variety of neuro-psychological, emotional, or behavioral difficulties.  Milestones uses three main types of therapy are listed below. Depending upon the child’s need, therapy can be effective individually, in small group, or as a family.  Milestones builds relationship and conducts therapy while engaging in preferred activities for children such as pretend play, role-playing, playing games, art projects, drawing, and creating charts and graphs.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: (which focuses less on past experiences and more on practical solutions and techniques) focuses on helping the child identify patterns of distorted thinking and how this impacts his/her daily life.  The focus of this therapy is to identify the dysfunctional patterns and retrain the child’s thought process to more functional and useful patterns and ways of relating with people and situations that occur.  For example, a child who has “black or white” thinking may not be flexible in daily life.  By helping the child see “shades of gray” and practice this thought processes, s/he can have relieve of symptoms.

  • Exposure Response Prevention Therapy: This type of therapy is used with children who struggle with Anxiety, Phobias, Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, and/or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.  Essentially, the therapists help the child (and family) build a progressive list of what is causing the anxiety or obsessions/compulsions and systematically exposes the child to the stimulus that is stressful while training the child to reduce (or eliminate) his/her anxiety response.  ER/P is often used in conjunction with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.
  • Psychotherapy: Generally thought of as “talk therapy” or “insight oriented therapy” where the therapist listens to what the child’s concerns are and helps the child see how past events may be causing current psychological symptoms.

Diagnostic Evaluations & Testing

We provide Developmental, Psychological, Speech & Motor Development, Behavioral, and Educational diagnostic evaluations and testing.

Diagnostic evaluations can assist when families notice a symptom or cluster of symptoms and are interested in determining if these symptoms are a variant of normal development or need diagnostic clarification.  Our team of expert Psychologist can evaluation children and assist with intervention, if necessary.

Academic Assessments or Cognitive IQ Testing

If a child is struggling with academic or learning issues, an Academic Assessment can pinpoint the exact problem underlying the child’s difficulty.  Academic assessments can also be helpful to measure progress over time as well or document a child’s cognitive functioning.  Our academic assessments can accurately determine what your child’s academic abilities are in all subject areas (including English Language Arts, Math, History, and Science).  Cognitive or IQ testing helps to determine your child’s overall areas of intellectually capacity or if your child has a specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscacula, etc..  Because part of our expert Team involves Psychologists and Educators, all evaluations are accompanied by expert educational and psychological recommendations.

Neuro-Psychological Evaluations

When a child is experiencing difficulty, families are often unclear as to the cause of the deficit.

Readiness Assessments (for students age 15-22)

As families begin to plan for their child’s transition from High School to Adulthood, our Readiness Assessments can help guide families (and the child’s Transition Plan) for what functional, daily living skills, and social goals need to be addressed prior to graduation.  Although you child may graduate from High School, the question really is, does s/he have the skills necessary to work or attend college and live independently.  The Readiness Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation which can help drive the child’s transition plan and can also include career counseling.

Developmental Mapping

All children’s skills develop globally in a general sequential order.  The reason for this is many skills are interrelated and, like constructing a building, one must have a solid foundation in order for the building to be strong and thrive.  If the building is missing some bricks, one might not notice, until the building starts exhibit problems.  Have you ever wondered if your child was missing any developmental stages?  Milestones’ Developmental Mapping™ will literally plot out all developmental stages your child has mastered and areas s/he needs to develop.  Milestones’ Developmental Mapping™ can be an excellent resource in driving your child’s IEP.

Functional Behavioral Assessments

When your child is exhibiting a specific behavioral concern (i.e., biting, falling to the floor, etc.) Milestones unique Functional Behavioral Assessment combines the best of scientific principles of Applied Behavior Analysis with more global areas of development such as sensory processing, language, and pragmatics.  Because Milestones’ staff have expertise in all areas of development (not just behavior), our assessments can focus on the underlying cause of the child’s behavior and treatment plans to eliminate the reasons behind the child’s behavior (instead of just eliminating one behavior, which often will lead to a new behavior because the reason behind the behavior is not addressed).

3-Year Re-Evaluation Testing or Independent Evaluations

When a child is due for a 3-year reevaluation or requires an independent evaluation, many parents and school teams would like to take that opportunity to investigate what areas of need the child has. Our 3-year evaluations or independent evaluations consist of any of the following individually or in combination:

  • Cognitive
  • Psychological
  • Neuropsychological
  • Behavioral
  • Academic Evaluations
