Frequently Asked Questions

I think something is wrong but I'm not sure what it is. Is this a good reason to have an evaluation?

Absolutely! Parents have great “gut instincts” about their child. Having an evaluation can ease fears. We will create a developmental map of where your child is and determine if your child’s development is on target or off target. We can then, if desired, provide treatment.

I had an evaluation somewhere else, but I don't agree with the result. Should I have another one?

This is a complex question and we can help you sort through the information and determine a course of action on the phone or by email. You can also use information from our website to make this determination on your own.

Are family members involved in my child's treatment?

At Milestones, we make family first! Depending upon the need of the child and his/her family, we can incorporate parents, siblings, or grandparents into the treatment session. Otherwise, we also have an exciting waiting space for
parents and siblings of all ages and a quiet homework area.

I don't want my child labeled. When you do an evaluation, doesn't that mean s/he will be labeled?

Labeling a child is an individual decision that only a parent can make. At Milestones, we can provide diagnostic evaluations and a diagnosis, if warranted. However, labels are not as important as focusing on what techniques and treatment will help the child gain necessary skills for success.

Must I stay with my child when s/he is having treatment?

No. Families may sign a consent form and leave our facility during treatment.

Can I observe my child when s/he is having an evaluation or treatment session?

We have an open-door policy and families or other Team members of the child may observe anytime s/he wishes. During some evaluations, we may ask family members to remain in the waiting room.

How is information communicated after treatment or an evaluation?

After all of our sessions (treatment or evaluation), the clinician will spend a brief period talking with families. For treatment, you will
receive ongoing brief written summaries after each session and periodic progress reports. After an evaluation, the clinician will
schedule a time to talk about the evaluation results with your family.

How do you know if a child is making progress and how is it measured?

Each child involved in treatment has measurable goals which are continuously updated and measured by objective and subjective data collection. The results are incorporated into the child’s progress report.

How do you determine which evaluations you do?

We conduct a thorough intake and take the time to listen to your
concerns. Based upon years of clinical experience we then
recommend pertinent evaluations and potential treatment to help
assess and treat the underlying cause of the problem
